Lately I’ve had a hard time finding things to be happy about and seem to be focusing only on the negative. That’s a problem, especially because I have so many things to be grateful for. I don’t want to become that person who takes things – people, health, career, life – for granted. So I’ve decided to consciously and deliberately reflect on at least one thing that happens each day for which I am grateful, or which is just all-around filled with goodness.

So with that said… here is a little ray of sunshine from today.

Often it seems that life gets in the way of friendship. Work, spouses, children, graduate school, obligations, obligations, obligations. As a single, childless, mid-30s woman, I feel this rather markedly as past friends have married and become parents. The calls and visits are few and far, far between… sometimes years go by before a call or email is returned. I feel dispensable. It hurts. I miss them. They are great people; all of my friends are awesome and I want to spend time with them.

Just as I resigned myself to living in Single Isolation, two friends contacted me: one via Facebook friend request on Thursday (to share that she’s preggers!!!); and one via email on Saturday (effusively apologizing for the time gone past, and with news of a new baby!).

It sounds like a small thing, I know. But hearing from these wonderful people went a long way to lift my spirits. They hadn’t forgotten about me after all, and still thought me important enough to share the good news in their lives.

It made happy, and I’ll admit it… I feel a little special.

So, here’s to good friends who never actually go away. Salut.
